Basically HPV(human papillomavirus) is the virus that causes genital warts.
If you ever get warts they can’t tell you what strain of virus you have or how long you’ve had it. HPV is detected by a pap smear
HPV can cause cancer (cervix, uterus, ovary and anal cancer in women and penis and anal cancer in men.)
There’s over 100 strains of HPV.
Even if a person doesn’t have symptons of genital warts they can still pass the virus onto other people who may or may not develop symptons.
Symptons are warts themselves appearing on the genital region.
The vaccine that is currently out of for 4 strains of HPV, 2 cause cervical cancer and another 2 cause genital warts.
Genitals warts are an STI (sexually transmitted infection) and are highly contagious.
You can have had HPV in the past and not develop warts right away, they can even appear five years later. (that is if the HPV strain is a genitals warts strain) also if you still have the HPV virus after the warts have been removed the warts will most likely come back.
So basically HPV is the main cause of genital warts. Genital warts is the STI as a result of HPV
