Resent(3-5 yrs) reports have started to show a link between HPV and squamous cell carcinoma of the mouth and throat. Reports have shown anywhere from 8 to 36 percent of these cancers contain HPV, of the high risk type. However the reports do not show how many people who have HPV get cancer. Some data indicates that people with high (>6) sexual partners have about a 3 times normal risk of developing cancer.
Some of these numbers can seem scary, but remember, smoking and heavy drinking will increase ones risk anywhere from 5 to 25 times normal. There is conflicting reports whether HPV and smoking/drinking are additive effects or not.

Also, know that HPV is a local infection. I assume you have been diagnosed with HPV based off of cervical screening with your annual pap smear. Just because you are infected in your cervix does not mean you are in your throat. Although, depending on your sexual practices, you could be.

It would seem to me the prudent thing would be to just be conscientious about your throat. If you notice anything out of the ordinary, see a doctor sooner, don’t just sit on it.

The link between oral sex and oral cancers is pretty strong, 5 oral sex partners..and our risk increases 250%.

I personal feel that we need to make sure our dentist do a complete oral screening.
