Let’s be clear. You said cold sores, which indicates they are on your mouth/face. You can get type1(called oral) or type 2 (called genital) herpes in/on your mouth or your genitals. You need to have the sores swabbed and tested at the doctor’s office to find out which herpes you have on your mouth. Until then, you do not know which virus it is.
If you have cold sores (sores around the mouth) but not on your genitals, then you don’t have genital herpes. In order to get herpes on your genitals you need to have someone with sores come in contact with your genitals (either with their mouth or genitals).
You can expose yourself (pay attention) if you touch an active cold sore on your face and then touch your genitals! So when you have a cold sore, wash your hands any time you must touch your mouth. Type 1 herpes does not transfer as easily to the genitals as Type 2 transfers to the mouth. ie it’s easier to get genital herpes in your mouth than it is to get oral herpes on your genitals. It is possible, however.
Hope that helps.

Genital herpes is on your genitalia, not your lips/mouth.
In the olden days, it was type I for the lips and type II for the genitals but now, it’s a little more mixed and either can affect either region.
Now, it is possible to give someone genital herpes if you went down on them when your cold sores start but the risk is not high, though it should be avoided.

no, it means that you have oral herpes. oral herpes is ussually HSV type 1, while genital is ussually HSV type 2. either can infect either area though.
depending on who you’re listening to, either 66% or over 80% of people have oral herpes. so it is very common and not that big of a deal. just do not give oral sex when you have a cold sore or until more than 2 weeks after it has healed completely. better yet, use a barrier method for oral sex (condom, dental damn, condom cut open (if no available dental damn).

No but if you have cold sores and perform oral on someone, it becomes genital herpes on that person.

No.
Cold sores ARE an outbreak of herpes – but since they are on your mouth it is oral hepres not genital, and since herpes stays in one location on your body you are only infectious from your mouth.
However, if you give someone oral sex when you have a cold sore you can easily give them genital herpes. You can even give them genital herpes this way when you do not have a cold sore – you are sometimes infectious in between.
I caught genital herpes through receiving oral sex from a partner with a history of cold sores – and he didn’t have one at the time. This happened to my sister as well – in fact 50-70% of genital herpes infections are caught this way, from someone that gets cold sores.
