Genital Warts And Stds Won’t Always Disqualify You From Army Or Other Military Service?

I was diagnosed with anal warts by my physician. When I went to MEPS to take my physical to get into the Army I was completely honest on the questionaire about my condition. The military doctor pulled me into his room, asked me a few questions, examined me for a minute and then cleared me for military service. I did not require a waiver, though this doesn’t necessarily mean another person wouldn’t. For me at least, I had a really bad case of anal warts and I was not disqualified. I am now a happily enlisted member of the United States Army.
This is such a relief. There is alot of bogus information out there on the internet regarding this – alot of people who don’t have a clue of what they’re talking about telling people it’s permanently disqualifying and what not. This simply IS NOT TRUE.
Does anyone else have a similar experience with STD’s and the military? Did you receieve alot of bogus information (your recruiter telling you to life for instance)?

What you wrote was partially true. Anal warts are not disqualifying. But, anal polyps are. Genital warts are not disqualifying unless they require frequent intervention or interfere with normal function. As far as STDs go, current untreated syphilis and presence of HIV virus is disqualifying.
However, given the history of medical questions posted on this site, I would agree there is a lot of bogus information. Somehow the general impression is that a permanently disqualifying condition can be waived or it can be finessed some way to permit entry into the armed forces. The really maddening responses are those in the “I know a guy who” category, placing that sort of cyberspace hearsay out there as gospel truth.
My recruiter never told me to lie about anything. But, since lying has become a very popular social practice, I can imagine it happening on occasion. Still, given the nature of a lot of questions posted here, I’d have to go with the theory that the lying is being contemplated or being done by the applicant. Not by the recruiter.

I don’t believe STD’s in them self are disqualifying but a history of them shows that one may promiscuous and that may well be a moral issue to be addressed.
