Can you have HPV virus and still have a normal pap smear?

I was just diagnosed with HPV virus. I had a pap smear in October of last year and wasn’t diagnosed with it then. I want to know if it’s possible that I had it and it didn’t show up in the pap smear. If it is possible, how likely is it that that could have happened.

    It is possible.

    Also, it can take up to 5 years after you are infected with HPV before it shows up on a pap smear.

    Talk to your GYN for more specific information including percentages.
