Can you catch genital warts/herpes if there are no outbreaks?

Even though a person may have a virus but not an outbreak of either genital warts or herpes, you can still catch it right?

This guy is trying to convince that you can’t.

Thanks.

  1. Book Says:

You absolutely can pass herpes along without an outbreak. The virus is in the skin, and just because there isn’t an outbreak doesn’t mean that you cannot pass the virus on to another host. It’s probably much less likely, but it’s still possible, and therefore worth avoiding.

Genital warts are a more sensitive issue… the virus is still embedded in the skin, and there is no “cure” per say. However, the flesh housing the virus can either be excised or otherwise destroyed, and the disease therefore gone. The length that the virus might lie dormant in your flesh if the treatment wasn’t complete varies from person to person and strain to strain, so I really cannot comment on that. It can however be gotten rid of, and therefore wouldn’t be possible to pass it.

At any rate, if a person is infected with either, they can pass it on whether they are having an outbreak or not.

With herpes there is only a small chance of passing it in between out breaks. Herpes is usually more contagious while there are signs of an out break. Herpes does some thing called shedding usually around the time of an in between out breaks for a small number of days out of the year. If you have herpes and are taking antiviral medication this will make you less likely to spread herpes even in between out breaks. You can pass genital warts when there are no out breaks too.

  3. STD Test Express Says:

Yes. You can get herpes from skin to skin contact, oral, vaginal, and anal sex.

The easiest way for herpes to spread is when there is an open, active sore. But you can still get herpes when there’s no outbreak at all. We’ll say that again. You can get herpes even when your partner is not having symptoms or showing any open sores.

So, how can herpes be prevented? While unpopular, not having sex at all is the only way to be 100% safe from STDs. But if you’re sexually active, latex condoms help drop the risk of transmission. Studies show that when a partner has herpes and takes the drug Valtrex daily, the risk of transmitting the virus is reduced by nearly 50%.

About 1 million new genital herpes cases are reported every year in the U.S. Millions more are likely unreported because people don’t know they have the virus. Getting tested is the only way to know. For more information, feel free to contact us directly. We’re here to help!
