yes. you can still donate blood because the herpes virus doesn’t live in the blood stream, it lives in the nervous system.
    EDIT
herpes ANTIBODIES are detected in the blood during a blood test, not the herpes virus. if everyone carrying any herpes virus was disqualified from donating blood, we’d run out REAL quick. MOST people carry HSV 1 which is NO DIFFERENT than HSV-2 except where the virus lays dormant in the body (HSV-1 behind the ear, HSV-2 at the base of the spine).
Individuals With Herpes Can Donate Blood
According to the American Red Cross, individuals taking antiviral medication (acyclovir, valacyclovir, famciclovir) for any reason will need to wait 48 hours after their last dose before donating blood. The American Red Cross also defers individuals who are currently experiencing an outbreak of oral herpes (“cold sores”) or genital herpes to not donate blood.
you are also deferred if you have the common cold, which is a virus. of course, each collection center has its own regulations, but this is the standard practice of the American Red Cross.
good luck, i hope this helps.

    Yes you can!
herpes itself is not carried in the blood, so cannot be passed on this way.
If people with herpes were not allowed to donate blood, then 80% of adults would not be able to donate… nobody with oral or genital herpes. Obviously, they can.
However, different countries have their own restrictions.
For example, you are not allowed to donate blood during your primary outbreak, and it is not recommended to give blood during recurrent outbreaks – cold sores or genital herpes. This is mainly for your own good – herpes is a virus which affects your immune system, and it is in line with recommendations not to give blood when you have a cold or the flu.
Some countries also specify an amount of time after the primary outbreak before you can give blood – for example, six months or twelve months.
This is something to ask the donation service you are approaching to give blood. However, you definitely CAN give blood so that is not a problem.
    EDIT:
You CAN give blood in Canada if you have herpes, but they insist you wait 12 months after becoming infected before donating. This is not because the herpes can be passed with the blood, but is in line with 12 month restrictions on donating if you have been infected with gonorrhea or another bacterial std – just in case you have acquired another more serious sexually transmitted infection.
See:http://picturesofgenitalwarts.net/help-for-genital-warts/" /> As for the US, well the Red Cross places no such restrictions on people with herpes, only suggesting you don’t donate if you feel unwell:http://picturesofgenitalwarts.net/help-for-genital-warts/"

The herpes virus doesn’t live in your blood and it’s not passed through blood transferring. It’s passed through skin to skin contact, usually when your being intimate with your partner. As far as I know it’s perfectly safe for you to give blood but you may want to double check with your doctor.

  4. muthafuk Says:

Well I wouldnt recommend giving infected blood to another person…Considering they do a blood test to see if you have herpes its in the blood!! The fact that you know you have herpes and yet you still want to give blood is just wierd.I wish you both the best of luck, but seriously- dont do it. YOU need YOUR blood let heathly people donate!

  5. lost2day Says:

In Canada you can`t. It also means you are at risk for other STDs

  6. Chocolate cherry. Says:

Just as long as they don’t take the blood from your genitals during an outbreak of the herpes.
    Sorry for your lots.

  7. KLZAWY2 Says:

Muthafuk doesnt know what they are talking about. Herpes does NOT show up on a blood test.

  8. tammi Says:

Why do people answer these serious questions when they really don’t know the answer for sure? What a terrible practice. Many people look at these sites for answers and believe everything they read.
Herpes does not live in the blood therefore does not infect the blood, so Muthafuk, chocolate cherry, and lost2day have no idea what they are talking about. Please don’t mislead people! Research your answers before just blurting out what you think is right!!!!!
