Can HPV be passed from mother to child at birth? How does it affect the baby?

I don’t have HPV (don’t know why I feel the need to defend that to strangers) but I just anwered a question, uninformed, about it. Actually one of my best girlfiends also had a baby about 2 years ago and she found out this year that she has HPV, she doesn’t know if she had it when she was pregnant cuz she changes boyfriends, but her son was adopted, is he at risk for developing HPV, is a baby girl at higher risk? Can it be avoided by giving birth C-section?

My friend has HPV and yes it can be passed to a baby during child birth. For my friend they just made sure she was not broken out and let her have a normal vaginal birth…the baby is fine and did not contract the virus! Just tell your friend to make sure she informs her OB doc’s about her HPV and everything should be fine!

The human papaloma viruse can be caused even by using protection it is a form of std but not like hurpies or crabs. Even non-sexual acts can cause this. No it will not get passed on to you child I had a natural birth and my son is fine and they never even mad a big deal out of it when it came to child birth, but I hope your friend gets papsmears done on a regular basis. It caused me to get overian cancer so if she has savear HPV she needs to go to the doctors every few months if it is only mild than she still needs to go but not as often. Don’t worry about the baby it should be fine.
