Can a pap smear be done with STD testing automatically or do you need to consent to STD tests specifically?
I saw a patient who tested positive for gonorrhea and she was upset because she didn’t want to be tested nor did she know STD testing was going to be done. Is this because STD testing is just included as the standard-of-care for sexually active women at risk or did she need to give consent to STD testing first?
This is in IL by the way.

Testing for STD’d is standard. The only test which requires consent is the HIV test.

Usually the person needs to ask specifically for certain STD tests to be done. Some Dr’s automatically send a combination of std tests in with the pap smear because a.)some std’s do not have any signs or symptoms and they want to make sure that the person is free of those std’s (i.e. chlamydia, etc.) or b.) they may suspect that the person has something
It depends on the Dr. The dr doesn’t generally send in a full sliding scale of std checks with every person’s pap smear.
It’s good that she found out though, so they could treat her as early as possible.

In any primary care centers, pap smear must be done along with some STDs. I am not sure about the particular ones, some of them are HIV, AIDS, gonorrhea, chlamydia, herpes, etc.
